Song Shengdong’s face darkened, his glare cutting into Song Ruying, who shrank back instinctively, fear evident in her eyes.
Swallowing hard, Song Zhenyu suppressed the bitterness in his chest and asked gently, “Ruying, how’s your mother? And your little sister? Are they all right?”
Thinking of Zhang Yingyue’s frail state,

Song Zhenyu felt a sharp pang in his chest at her words Gritting his teeth, he turned toward his father and said, “Dad, I’ll take this load back home first. Let Tianqi and Tianheng stay here in my place.”
Song Shengdong’s face grew darker as he muttered, “Zhang Yingyue already has so many children. What’s there to see? It’s not like she’s had a boy.”
Song Zhenyu ignored his father’s words, feeling a sense of unease creeping into his heart. He didn’t know why, but he couldn’t afford to think about it now. Filling his bag with corn on the cob, he tied them to the carrying pole, hoisted it onto his shoulders, and left with Song Ruying by his side, hurrying toward home.
Before they even reached the house, the sound of Wei Zhilan’s angry scolding reached their ears.
.Several neighbors sat outside their homes, listening intently. Upon spotting Song Zhenyu, they greeted him with smiles that felt anything but genuine. “Congratulations, Zhenyu, on becoming a father again! Having a daughter isn’t bad–daughters are so sweet,” one called out.
Song Zhenyu didn’t stop to respond. His heart felt heavy, and he knew their words carried a mocking edge.
He was all too aware of what they truly thought of him–four children, two of them slow–witted boys, two girls, and no strong heir to support his future.
Carrying two baskets of corn on the cob into the main room, Song Zhenyu wasted no time heading straight for the back room. The moment he opened the door, the sharp, metallic scent of blood overwhelmed him.
The smell was even stronger than it had been after Zhang Yingyue’s previous deliveries.
She lay still on the bed, pale and lifeless. The sight froze Song Zhenyu in place, his eyes welling up with tears. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he forced himself to speak.
“Yingyue…”
Song Ruying was already at the bedside, shaking Zhang Yingyue and calling out, “Mom!”
Zhang Yingyue stirred faintly, her voice weak as she murmured, “Ruying… you’re back. Where’s your dad?”
Hearing her voice, Song Zhenyu’s heart leapt with relie Wiping his face quickly, he stepped closer with a forced smile. “I’m here. You’ve worked hard.”
As his eyes adjusted to the dim light, he noticed his youngest daughter sleeping soundly beside her

mother. His heart softened at the sight.
Turning to his older daughter, he said, “Raying to heat some water in the inchen Well dem your mother up.
“Zhenyu…” Zhang Yingyue’s eyes filled with tears. She didn’t want Song Zheary to incite himef in the mess. She knew it wasn’t his place to handle it, yet she was too weak to do anything herself
But Song Zhenyu took her hand gently and said, Tm rry The let you suffer like this Le me the cre it. There’s not much else I can do.”
The guilt in his voice mirrored the guilt in his heart. He hadn’t been able to provide her with the life se deserved, not even a warm meal after childbirth Cleaning up after her was the leak he could do.
Choking back her emotions, Zhang Yingyue swallowed hard and stayed silen
In no time, Song Ruying returned with hot water. Song Zhenyu pulled back the coners and begen dexing Zhang Yingyue. But as he worked, a terrible realization dawned on him
His hands shook as he murmured, “Why won’t this bleeding stop?”
He knew childbirth was messy, but this continuous bleeding was unnatural. Zhang Yingyue was dreaty frail–how could she possibly endure this?
“No… we need a doctor. I’ll ask Mom for help right now! Leaving the handkerchief behind Song Zhayne stood and hurried out of the room.
Inside the main house, Wei Zhilan was still ranting, hertemper flaring to the point removed one of her shoes and was striking the bed frame with it for emphasis

Song Zhenyu pushed the door open and knelt immediately before his mother. “Mom, please! Yingyue is still bleeding. We need a doctor to see her!”
Wei Zhilan’s face twisted with rage. Pointing at her son, she snapped, “Why do we need a doctor for her? That useless woman! You left the fields to come back here, didn’t you? Are you planning to leech off this family? Look at that lot behind you! Do you expect me to feed you all for free?”
Her words dripped with disdain. Wei Zhilan had no affection for her third son, no fondness for his slow- witted boys, and no patience for his two daughters, who she considered worthless burdens.
“A doctor? Forget it! If she dies, she dies.”
Each cruel word struck Song Zhenyu like a dagger to the heart. He clenched his fists, his mind racing with thoughts of Zhang Yingyue lying helpless at home.
With renewed determination, he met his mother’s gaze and gritted his teeth. “Mom, Yingyue is my wife. If anything happens to her, my children won’t survive either. And if I lose my mind from grief, don’t blame me for what I might do, even to my own family.”
For once, Song Zhenyu’s voice carried a threatening edge. His usually obedient demeanor had vanished, replaced by a steely resolve.
Wei Zhilan froze, as if his words had stirred a memory she’d rather forget. After a long pause, she pulled a string of copper coins from her blouse and threw it at him.

“You ingrate!” she wailed. “Chunhua! Go to the fields and call your father–in–law back! This disgraceful child is turning on his own mother!”
Ignoring her cries, Song Zhenyu snatched the coins from the ground and ran out of the house without a second glance.
In the courtyard, Liu Chunhua watched Song Zhenyu’s retreating figure. She could sense the tension in the air, and a faint smile crossed her lips before she quickly hid it. Feigning panic, she rushed into the main house, crying, “Mom! What happened? What has Zhenyu done now?”
Wei Zhilan, seething with fury, barked, “Go to the fields and bring everyone home! I’m kicking those useless fools out today!”
Feigning shock, Liu Chunhua nodded quickly. “Yes, Mom”
As she left, her gaze fell on the timid Song Ruying. Shooting her a cold glare, Liu Chunhua swiveled her hips and walked off.
Inside, Liu Chunhua was ecstatic. Liu Chunhua had three sons herself, while the second branch had two sons and a daughter. With Song Shengdong and Wei Zhilan getting older, they were bound to fight for the inheritance.
She had been dreading the idea of Zhang Yingyue giving birth to a son. Thankfully, that hadn’t happened. Now, Song Zhenyu had defied the family for her sake–a perfect excuse to push for division.
Feigning fear, she reached the fields and called out dramatically, “Dad, Zhenming, Zhenxin! Come quickly! Zhenyu hit Mom!”
