As it turned out, the password Janelle had used in the elevator that day when she went to find Drayton was the one she had obtained from Zachary
She casually offered an excuse, saying, “Since your Uncle Drayton is about to get engaged to my paternal half–sister, he will essentially be my future ‘brother–in–law. I was planning to ask him for a favor the other day.”
“What favor?” Zachary asked.
“It’s regarding the closure of my animal hospital. As a ‘bigwig‘ in the pharmaceutical industry, I assumed he must be well- acquainted with the regulatory authority. I hoped he could pull some strings for me.”
Even Janelle found her excuse somewhat far–fetched upon voicing it out. However, to prevent Zachary from suspecting the complicated relationship between her and Drayton, she could only temporarily gloss it over this way.
“Here I was wondering why you were looking for him.” Zachary commented casually. “You should have told me earlier if you needed some connections. I’m quite close with the Chief of the Department of Health’s son. A small matter like this could be Jsolved
with just a phone call! There’s no need to involve Uncle Drayton!”
“Yeah, I was desperate then and acted hastily. I didn’t even see him when I went there that day, to be honest,” said Janelle.
Zachary chuckled. “It’s not surprising you didn’t. As the CEO of a corporation, he’s swamped with work every day and flying around the world. He doesn’t have the time to deal with your miscellaneous matters. If you need help in the future, just come to me directly.”
Janelle lowered her head and took another sip of water, falling silent once more.
After a brief pause, she abruptly asked him. “Zachary, your uncle seems to care about you quite a bit, doesn’t he?”
Zachary flashed a smile. “You could say that. Though he’s my uncle by seniority, he’s no different from my brother. We’re so close we could practically share a pair of pants. We can enjoy any activity together. As long as he doesn’t force me into drug research and development like him, I’d even call him ‘Dad!”
Janelle’s emotions became complex, but she merely smiled. “Let’s ear. The food has gotten cold.”
At this point, Zachary placed the first slice of the finely cut marbled steak onto her plate, tentatively initiating a conversation. “Would this be considered our first official ‘date? I apologize for the last time. I didn’t even treat you to a meal”
Upon hearing his words, Janelle lifted her gaze, only to meet with his intense, burning stare again.
She not–so–subtly avoided it, appearing thoughtful as she took a bite of her steak “Zachary, remember the mountain bike you gave me last time? I’ve brought it with me this time. It’s in the trunk of the car. Don’t forget to take it later.”
Zachary’s hand, holding a fork, froze in mid–air.
“What do you thean by that?” His expression darkened, clearly a bit upset. “If it’s because you don’t like the bike’s performance or style just say so. I can get you a different one.
Janelle replied, “No, it’s not that. It’s just that this bike is over a million, far too expensive. I can’t accept it”
After a brief moment to collect himself, Zachary muttered, “Janelle, we’ve known each other for a long time. There are some things I don’t want to hide and hold back anymore, so I’ll be direct. I like you very much. I was deeply attracted from the very first moment I saw you”
His eyes sparkled as he gazed at her, and his voice softened. “But I don’t want to pursue you in the same mundane way I did. with other girls. You’re truly so wonderful in my eyes, I’m afraid I might inadvertently tarnish you-”
Janelle couldn’t help but interrupt him, “Don’t say another word.”
She had long been aware of Zachary’s feelings for her, so hearing these confessions now did not surprise her.
