Chapter 6 No More Time To Play With You

Drayton approached her, his tone accusatory as if he was ready to interrogate her.
“Did I not warn you, Janelle, to completely stay out of my life? Why are you causing a scene at the Hayward residence?”
Janelle was slightly taken aback.
She scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Mr. Quiller, you’re truly amusing. The Hayward family is my biological father’s home, and this place is my territory. If anyone’s intruding, it’s you, stepping into my world. I could even call the police for trespassing!”
His expression darkened, his handsome face growing somber.
Without thinking, he moved closer, his tall figure looming over her, so close that his suit trousers nearly brushed her face. He reached out and seized her chin, forcing her to meet his icy gaze.
“Now that you know about my connection to the Hayward family,” he warned, his voice cold and threatening, “it’s best you keep our business to yourself. Especially in front of Abigail.”
She allowed his large hand to gently hold her chin, her beautiful eyes locked directly with his in a steady gaze.
“Is that so?”
Unfazed, she countered him with a playful glint in her eyes. “What ‘secrets’ between us aren’t we supposed to spill? Should we not tell her that we’ve explored every position, or should we not tell her that we’ve tried out every possible location?”
Drayton’s frustration intensified, gripping tighter with his hand. He seriously wished he could just squeeze the life out of her!
But in the end, he let go with a sense of distaste, making his way to the balcony to light up a cigarette. As he exhaled clouds of smoke, it seemed as though he was trying to alleviate the turmoil of emotions brewing within him.
Janelle languidly lounged on the sofa, thinking about his earlier outburst of emotion, she couldn’t help but let out a cold, mocking laugh.
It appeared that Abigail, his fiancée, must have held a significant place in his heart.
Otherwise, it would have been impossible for him, a man constantly swamped with myriad tasks, to come threatening her the moment she stepped out.
Heh.
She glanced toward his silent figure on the balcony, where he stood smoking, his posture unreadable. She couldn’t for the life of her figure out what this man was planning next.
Just then, her phone chimed with a new notification. It was a message from someone she had saved in her contacts as “Zachary” on WhatsApp. He was asking if she was free to grab a late-night meal that evening.
Without much hesitation, she accepted the latter’s invitation.
Quickly pulling herself together from the mess of emotions she’d just experienced, Janelle moved to Drayton’s side and began to usher him out. “All right, Mr. Quiller, I have to head out tonight, I don’t have time to entertain you,” she said.
She leaned against the glass window of the balcony, a cold laugh escaping her lips. “Since we’ve already settled our accounts long ago, I know exactly what to do. Who you marry is none of my concern. As for me, I have a date later, so you may leave now!”
She’d said plenty, but it seemed the only word that caught his attention was “date.”
His gaze, sharp as a blade, swept over her, a mix of anger and mockery flashing in his eyes.
“Found your next partner?” he asked, his voice low and cutting.
“Indeed.”
Janelle casually remarked, “I’ve found a young guy who’s also from a wealthy family. He’s tall and strong, and he’s more than a decade younger than you, brimming with youthful energy!”
He took several long, harsh drags from his cigarette, his fingers tightening around it before he finally extinguished the butt in the ashtray.
His mood had soured, darkened by a confusion he couldn’t shake.
He didn’t even know what had brought him here tonight.
All he knew was that every word that came from this woman’s mouth only fueled an overwhelming urge to strangle her.
A surge of nameless anger flared within his chest, gradually searing through his every vein and organ.
At that moment, Janelle’s WhatsApp chimed again. Zachary was asking her where they should meet.
She held her phone, responding to the latter via voice message. “Either works, you decide. The music bar where we met last time was quite good. Yeah, when you get there—”
Unexpectedly, before Janelle could finish speaking, Drayton suddenly snatched the phone from her hands.
With a resounding “thud”, he tossed her cellphone into a trash can a few meters away, as if it were nothing more than garbage!
For a few seconds, Janelle didn’t react. Once she did, she exploded in anger. “Are you… out of your mind?”
She wanted to retrieve her phone immediately, but before she could even take a step, Drayton roughly grabbed her arm. Without uttering a word, he pushed her down onto the sofa.
