Vera disdainfully withdrew her arm, speaking in an indifferent tone. “I’m no longer young, so my diet needs to be light. I have a nutritionist who plans my meals. There’s no need for any of you to cook for me.”
She then turned to look at Raylee. “You should go on your own, dear. I won’t accompany you.”
“I’m not going either. I want to stay home with you, Grandma,” Raylee said, resting her head on Vera’s arm.
“All right, if you don’t want to go, then don’t go.”
With a smile, Vera affectionately ruffled her hair.
When she looked at Waverly, her demeanor turned cold again.
“We’re not going. You go ahead.”
Watching the affectionate interaction between the two, Waverly couldn’t help but feel a surge of jealousy.
“Nonetheless, she dared not show it. She merely put on a vulnerable and pitiful facade.
“Grandma, are you displeased with me? If there’s something about me that you don’t like, I can change. I..”
Listening to her relentless rambling, Vera felt a headache coming on. She impatiently interrupted, “I’m going to bed. You should head back now.”
Waverly pleaded, “Raylee, I’m begging you, please go have dinner. Dad and Mom truly miss you, and so does Samuel. About the swimming pool incident-
“Shut up!” Raylee’s voice rang out in fury. “You can leave now!”
She wanted to keep the incident at the swimming pool a secret, fearing it might upset Vera.
Yet, here Waverly was, bringing it up right in front of Vera. Was she doing it on purpose?
Waverly wanted to continue speaking, but upon meeting Raylee’s gaze, she was startled into a shiver. With teary eyes, she said, “Okay then. Raylee, Grandma, I’ll be heading back now.”
“What swimming pool incident? What happened?” Vera asked anxiously.
“The ring just fell into the swimming pool. Nothing else happened. Don’t worry about it, Grandma.”
“You gave me quite a scare, Kay–Ray. If something’s really going on, you need to tell me. I won’t let anyone bully you.”
Raylee nodded in agreement.
Vera continued, “Why don’t you go tomorrow? Otherwise, who knows what that sly girl will do to scheme against you. She might even try to drive a wedge between you, your parents, and your brother!”
Raylee shook her head. “Let her be. But Grandma, it seems like you don’t really like her, do you?”
“Remove the ‘seems like,” Vera said indignantly. “She’s been back for four years, yet she’s never treated me with any respect. There was a time when I was hospitalized and my caregiver had taken a leave. She bravely volunteered to take care of me. I lost control of my bladder and bowels, and she was utterly disgusted. She even cursed me behind my back, wishing I would just die sooner rather than later. She thought I was asleep and couldn’t hear her, but in reality, I saw her true colors very clearly. Although she’s indeed my granddaughter by blood, she has a wicked heart!”
Raylee had not expected that Waverly had such a history with Vera.
She dared to curse Grandma to death Waverly truly is a horrible person!
“She has your father, mother, and brother all wrapped around her fingers. If it wasn’t for the sake of our blood ties, I wouldn’t have put up with her!” said the annoyed Vera. “In any case, I’ve made my will. Not a single penny of my fortune will go to her.

Raylee’s eyes welled up with tears. “Grandma. I have no interest in your wealth. Even if you left it to me. I’d donate it all. From now on, I’ll be by your side. If anyone dares to harm you, they’ll have to deal with me!”
That night, she fell asleep with her head in Vera’s lap, just as she used to do when she was a child. She slept with a sense of peace and tranquility.
Three days later, it was Christmas.
Jeremiah had asked Raylee out to a popular amusement park nearby.
Nowadays, Raylee had social anxiety and initially wanted to decline. However, upon hearing that it was a ticket for a night event that would only last a few hours, she agreed.
Rumor had it that there was a grand Christmas fireworks display at ten o’clock.
On the evening of Christmas at eight o’clock, Raylee set off for the amusement park.
The driver had taken her halfway when the car suddenly broke down.
She was only roughly a kilometer away, so she chose to get out of the car and walk.
On the zebra crossing, she saw the red light turn green and promptly crossed the road.
Suddenly, a pink sports car sped toward her without slowing down.
Raylee’s eyes widened in fear. As the sports car was about to hit her, she turned and threw herself toward the greenery on the side of the road.
The car screeched to a halt, leaving a long skid mark on the ground.
A woman clad in black boots emerged from the sports car, storming toward Raylee in a fit of rage. She hurled insults at Raylee, utterly disregarding reason.
“Are you blind? Pay attention to where you’re going! It’s a good thing I braked in time, or you would have been hit!”
Kaylee was stunned. Was this woman driver crazy? She had clearly run a red light, yet she had the audacity to play the victim
first!
Raylee hobbled to her feet. In her haste to avoid the oncoming sports car, she had even lost one of her shoes.
Thankfully, her quick reaction saved her. Otherwise, given the speed of the car just now, she would have been severely injured, if not dead.
