As I watched her getting anxious, I suddenly recalled how she hadn’t shown such anxiety when I disappeared.
My mother’s hands trembled as she dialed Officer John’s number. She had to press the call button several times before successfully calling Officer John.
“Angel is missing!”
“I’ll check the surveillance cameras right away!” Officer John said seriously.
At that moment, I was confused. After all, why did the police start investigating as soon as Angel pulled the disappearing act?
It seemed that my mother didn’t expect him to be so accommodating as well. Regardless, her tense shoulders immediately went down. “I’ll be right there!”
Then, she sped to the station. Just as she arrived, Officer John had just pulled up the footage.
It showed Angel driving my mother’s car and heading straight to the river. Then, she got out of the car and jumped into the water without a second thought.
When my mother watched the footage, she became lightheaded and had to lean against the table for support. I saw nothing but pure despair in her eyes.
However, Officer John seemed enthusiastic. “She must be fleeing in guilt! I just called her in for questioning tomorrow, and she’s now on the run!”
My mother was dumbfounded. Then, she asked tremulously, “What are you talking about? Can’t you see that my daughter just jumped into the river?”
Officer John realized that he was being insensitive.
So, he softened his tone as he explained, “I forgot to mention it earlier, but we checked the surveillance footage around the abandoned amusement park yesterday and discovered that Angel was seen near the park on the day of
1/2
the crime. She’s a prime suspect!”
“I told you she was at home studying that night!” My mother turned a deaf ear to his accusations.
She shoved the door open and staggered outside, even falling; on the stairs in her taste. She didn’t have time to argue with Officer John. All she wanted to do was to save Angel.
As she sped to the bridge where Angel had jumped, the police search team followed close behind. They searched for two days, but Angel’s body was nowhere to be found. It was as if she had vanished without a trace.
My mother cried by the river for two whole days. She had dark bags under her eyes, and her eyes were red and
- ty. She had completely lost her once–composed demeanor.
ndescribable bitterness welled up inside me. After all, she looked truly devastated as she had lost her beloved ghter.
I watched as she grabbed the police officers‘ collars in rage and begged God to bring Angel back.
Two days had passed, and she still insisted on finding Angel even though she knew there was only a slight hope. Then, Officer John got out of his car. Although he had heavy bags under his eyes, he looked spirited.
“I have good news!”
The nearby officers hurried over, eager to end this fruitless search.
At the same time, my mother’s eyes lit up with hope as she ran over. “Is it about Angel?”
However, Officer John shook his head. Instead, he pulled a cell phone from his pocket.
The second he did, my heart began to race.
After all, it was my phone!
“I tracked down Melissa’s phone and found a knife nearby that matched the murder weapon. There is also the killer’s blood and DNA on it.”
The light in my mother’s eyes faded away upon hearing his words.
“What kind of good news is that? I’ve been telling you she’s the murderer! I’m only here for news about Angel!”
Officer John frowned and snapped, “We checked Melissa’s phone, and the message she sent you was scheduled. There’s a possibility that the killer used her phone to mislead us. Something could have happened to her at that exact moment. We confirmed Angel was at home that day, but our footage was dated the previous day. Was she home then?”
