The truth was just right there.
As I heard their conversation, my hands were shaking as I clutched my chest.
Memories of her killing me flashed through my mind.
My mother froze for a moment. However, she was overwhelmed by an explosive wave of emotion instead of realizing the truth.
“My daughter has gone missing after jumping into the river! I’m here to find her, not to listen to you slander her as a murderer!”
Officer John understood it was hard for my mother to accept reality as it was. So, he wanted to explain further, but she cut him off sharply.
“You guys still can’t distinguish right from wrong. Her sister is the murderer, not Angel. Angel jumped into the river. She did this because of you!”
At this point, Officer John was frustrated to hear that same old accusation over and over again.
“The blood report will be out tonight. Then, we’ll know whether Melissa is the victim!”
Then, Officer John stormed off.
After that, my mother fell to her knees and looked devastated. After a long silence, she started sobbing sadly.
“Why is it that both my daughters are dead, yet that murderer is still alive?”
‘No, Mom. That’s not the case.‘ I felt a tightness in my throat.
‘Yes, the killer’s still alive, but I’m long dead.‘
My mother was close to a breakdown as she sobbed uncontrollably.
There were many police officers around, but none of them stepped forward to offer comfort. After all, they had all seen how irrationally my mother was behaving just now. Some even began discussing the case openly, suspecting whether Angel was the murderer.
My mother glared at them with pure malice upon hearing their analysis.
“You were driven to suicide, but I won’t let them forget you!”
Then, she cried as she typed out a lengthy post. She claimed that the police had defamed Angel as the murderer while the real killer, Melissa, was still roaming outside. Her words reflected how devastated a mother was as her daughter had been wrongly driven to her death.
I could only look at her sadly.
