William finally arrived at the scene then. He looked at Karen, his face etched with utter disappointment.
He said, “I can’t believe you’re someone like this, Mom. I trusted you so much, yet you went and framed Lucy just to save yourself. You should just move back out; I can’t have you living with us anymore. Take care of yourself.”
Karen was desperately crying. She went down on her knees and begged for my forgiveness, yet I ignored her.
William then turned to me, looking ashamed as he said, “I’m sorry for misunderstanding you, Lucy.”
His apology was sincere, but I didn’t feel touched in any way.
I looked at him, asking, “And? Is your apology of any use? Can it negate all the hurt I felt before you apologized to me?
“We’ve been married for many years, William. Don’t you know what kind of person I am? But when false accusations came up, the first thing you did was to believe in others instead of your wife.”
I couldn’t care less about the bystander’s slanders, yet William’s distrust toward me hurt me deeply.
Trust was what mattered the most between a married couple. I always trusted him unconditionally, yet to my shock, he was the complete opposite.
He was ready to believe that I cheated on him just after listening to Karen’s lies. He didn’t even consider defending
me at all.
I completely lost in terms of trust.
“I’ve had enough. Maybe we’re just not meant to be,” I said tiredly.
William panicked instantly. His voice was filled with pain as he said, “Please calm down, Lucy. I know I’m wrong this time, but I always treated you well in the past. Didn’t you used to like me a lot?”
I looked at him with utmost sincerity. “I won’t deny that I still love you, but we’re truly not meant to be. I’m scared -I’m scared that you’ll treat me the same way if this happens again. I can’t trust you anymore.”
My tone was firm, leaving no room for reconciliation.
William’s eyes dimmed as though losing all life. He chuckled bitterly before saying, “I understand.”
In the end, he chose to walk away with nothing, leaving all his assets to me.
“My mom and I wronged you. Just take it, Lucy. Otherwise, will never feel at peace,” he told me.
