Chapter 8
Suddenly, an immense force grabbed me and dragged me backward. I was pulled into a warm embrace the next instant.
“I found you. I finally found you, Maisie,” came a shaky voice from above my head. My mind went blank, and my body stiffened. I could still hear the voice speaking next to my ear.
“I’ve been looking for you for so long. I… I thought something bad had happened to you. Maisie, how could you be so cold–hearted? You abandoned me without even allowing me a second chance first.”
I snapped out of my reverie and realized the person who was hugging me was Sean. I struggled and squirmed away from his hands.
“Mister, please keep your hands off me. Don’t get in the way while I’m trying to help the wounded.”
I turned around and hurried toward the area where I was needed.
While I was treating my patient’s wounds, Sean stayed around to assist me. He kept his mouth shut, yet he could somehow tell what I needed and get it for me.
After I had finished treating the patients, Sean was still following behind me. He threw his arms around me and hugged me tightly when he saw that I was no longer busy.
He said in a choked voice, “Maisie, don’t move. Let me hug you for a bit.”
I tried to squirm free, but to no avail. It was only after his emotions had calmed down a little that Sean had let go of his hands.
I shoved him away with all my might. “What the hell are you doing? Why did you hug me?”
“You’re my wife. What’s wrong with me hugging you for a while?”
“You need to get one thing clear, then. You and I got divorced more than three months ago.”
“That doesn’t count. I wasn’t even…”
I cut him off, “I don’t want to hear about all that. What are you doing here?”
Sean seemed like he had not expected me to treat him so coldly when I used to speak to him in a gentle
voice.
“Is it because of Evelyn? Honey, you need to hear me out. I can explain. She and I aren’t in that kind of relationship you’re imagining. She was my friend’s girlfriend.”
I felt like my ears might fall off at some point with the number of times I had heard of these words from him. However, Sean used to say that Evelyn was just a colleague. Now, he was changing the narrative.
Still, I had no interest in what he had to say.
Unfortunately, I had no way of stopping his stubborn attempt to explain. He eventually told me what actually happened in the past.
Regardless, it was impossible to piece back my broken heart. I chose to trust my gut feeling.
“Did you honestly think I would forgive you if you just told me the truth? Sean, even if you and Evelyn are not in that kind of relationship… Even if I believed that Evelyn was your late friend’s girlfriend…

“You should put your hand over your heart and ask yourself. How did you treat me ever since Evelyn was transferred to your college?”
Sean held my hand a bit nervously. “Maisie, I know what I did was wrong now. I’ve caused you a lot of pain. I’ll change! I mean it. Please believe me.”
He took out his phone and held it out to me, as if trying to show it off to me. “See! I’ve deleted Evelyn’s contact details.”
I snickered. “So, you’re not totally clueless, after all. You knew how you two had not kept your boundaries properly around each other.”
Sean was rendered speechless.
“Sean, you thought I would always be a meek, obedient wife who would not cause any fuss. You thought I would never leave you no matter how hurtful your actions were to me.
“That was why you treated me however you wanted and never considered my feelings in everything that you did. You and she did all those inappropriate actions time and time again.
“Do you know this, though? As much as I love you, I’m just a human. My heart aches, too. I’m thoroughly disappointed with you, and I don’t want you anymore.
“So, please stay out of my life from now on. You’ve seen how happy I am with my current life. I have tons of things to do every day.”
Sean’s face was drained of color. He had an agonized expression on his face.
Just then, Victor came over and informed me that it was time for us to change the dressings for some of the patients.
“Mm,” I responded.
Then, I looked at Sean. “Let’s end things here, Sean. I don’t regret having loved you, and I hope you’ll be able to move on soon. Let’s live our lives well separately after this.”
