The unexpected knock on the door momentarily disrupted the focus of the two individuals engrossed in their work within the study.
Olivia and Benjamin instinctively turned their heads toward the source of the interruption, only to find Liam peeking through the doorway, an apologetic look etched across his youthful face. “Mommy, I’m sorry for interrupting. I brought Daddy to see the study,” he explained, his voice laced with a hint of regret.

The concept of touring the study sparked a flicker of curiosity in Olivia’s eyes as she peered over Liam’s shoulder at Nathan standing behind him. She found herself genuinely perplexed. The study, a room dedicated to work and concentration, hardly seemed like a place that would pique someone’s interest for a casual visit.
It was Benjamin, however, who found himself intently scrutinizing Nathan with a look of solemn evaluation, as if trying to decipher his intentions.
“Mommy, are you still busy with work?” Liam inquired.
Olivia nodded gently. “Yes.”
Her gaze then shifted to Nathan, a mix of inquiry and assumption in her tone, “Are you leaving?”
She had presumed Liam’s inquiry was a prelude to Nathan’s departure.
Nathan perceived her question as a subtle hint for him to exit, his expression clouding over for a moment before he replied with a measured calmness, “No, actually, I was hoping to spend more time with Liam.”
Olivia paused, taken aback by his response. After a moment’s contemplation, she suggested, “In that case, perhaps you should join us and have a look too.”
Nathan, visibly surprised by her invitation, queried, “What exactly are you looking at?”
“We’re examining the system at the tech park,” Olivia explained. She reasoned that since Nathan was already here, it presented an ideal opportunity for him to personally assess the recently upgraded system.
Intrigued, Nathan’s eyebrows rose slightly in interest, and he consented without further question, “All right, I’ll come take a look.”
As he approached Benjamin, Nathan gave him a look that silently demanded space. It seemed apparent to Nathan that Benjamin should have known to step aside.
Despite his reluctance, Benjamin, constrained by Olivia’s presence and not wishing to provoke a scene, clenched his fists and complied, making room for Nathan.
A subtle smirk curled the corners of Nathan’s lips as he claimed the space Benjamin had vacated, positioning himself deliberately between Olivia and Benjamin.
The tension between the men was palpable, but Benjamin chose to conceal any discomfort, focusing instead on the unfolding situation.
Unaware of the silent battle of wills, Olivia pulled her computer closer, inviting Nathan to scrutinize the screen, “Take a look at this.”

As Nathan observed the display, filled with complex data strings and analyses, he found himself momentarily puzzled.
Olivia began to elaborate, “This is the upgraded system we’ve been working on.”

Nathan cast a glance at her as she continued, “There were some aspects that hadn’t been completed earlier, causing some errors to slip through the cracks, but we’ve already made the amendments. There’s a robust three–layer firewall that can intercept any breach in the system and counter–track the hackers.”
Naghan noticed that her confidence shone through her explanation. It was a sight to behold, and he found himself unable to look away.
This was something he had never seen on her face before.
She had truly grown a lot over the years.
Just then, Benjamin, attempting to undermine Nathan’s comprehension, remarked coolly, “I suppose you aren’t familiar with this, right, Mr. Carter?”
Nathan heard the underlying sarcasm but chose to disregard it, considering Benjamin’s attempt at belittlement insignificant.
Surprisingly, it was Olivia who defended him, asserting confidently, “He can understand it.”
Benjamin’s expression flickered with surprise and discomfort, not expecting Olivia to champion Nathan’s understanding.
Nathan himself was pleasantly surprised by her support, his spirits lifting noticeably.
In truth, Nathan was not only capable of understanding the system; he also possessed a foundational knowledge of coding, albeit not at Olivia’s level of expertise.
Yet, based on the system Olivia had showcased, he could appreciate its complexity and the skill required for its development.
Benjamin had hoped to witness Nathan falter, but that moment was not forthcoming.
Instead, Nathan found himself genuinely impressed by Olivia’s capabilities, which seemed to surpass even his prior estimation of her skills.
