Caught in his reverie, Nathan was brought back to the present by Liam’s inquisitive voice. “Daddy, why did you stop? What’s making you zone out like that?” Liam’s confusion was evident, noticing the pause in Nathan’s interaction with the photo album.
Collecting himself, Nathan drew in a deep breath, pushing down the swell of emotions. He managed a smile, attempting to reassure Liam, “It’s nothing. Let’s keep looking through the album, shall we?”
As they continued, Olivia’s presence in the photographs became less frequent, and it was mostly Liam alone.
“Daddy, look, this was when I was two. Mommy took me to Yowhayton for Christmas,” Liam shared, each photograph accompanied by stories of the places they had visited and the memories they had created.
Nathan watched, absorbing each image of Liam’s bright, innocent smiles, feeling a poignant sense of participation in those missed moments.
Time seemed to accelerate as they delved deeper into the album, with another hour swiftly passing by.
Olivia, approaching the doorway, paused at the sight before her. Nathan and Liam were still deeply -engrossed in the photo album, the lamp’s warm light enveloping them in a scene of tender intimacy.
She found herself reluctant to interrupt such a peaceful moment, yet the late hour pressed the necessity. “Liam, it’s getting late. Time for bed,” she said, her voice soft yet firm.
The father and son had just finished looking through the album when they heard her.
Nathan looked up, momentarily caught in a flashback of Olivia enduring her pregnancy in solitude, washing dishes with her swollen belly.
This fleeting memory stirred a subtle ache in his gaze, though Olivia seemed unaware of his emotional turbulence. “Mr. Carter, Liam needs to rest. It’s past his bedtime,” she gently reiterated.
Regaining his composure, Nathan met her calm eyes and nodded in agreement, “Of course.”
He then carefully selected a few photographs to take with him, memories he couldn’t bear to leave behind.
“Daddy, I don’t want you to go,” Liam exclaimed, his reluctance evident as he clung to Nathan’s leg.
Nathan crouched down, his touch gentle as he comforted the little one, “I’ll call you soon, and we’ll plan something, okay?”
Liam, though hesitant, nodded in agreement. “Okay.”
Despite his reluctance, he bravely saw Nathan off.

“Really?” Benjamin chuckled darkly, his sarcasm thinly veiled, “Seems like you have a talent for forgetting, Mr. Carter.”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed, sensing the undercurrent of tension, “If you have something to say, Mr. Hayes, just say it.”
Benjamin’s retort was pointed, “Quite the spectacle, Mr. Carter. One day announcing a marriage, the next selecting your mistress.”
With a final cold glance, Benjamin departed, leaving Nathan to chuckle to himself before he too left, the weight of the exchange lingering in the air as they went their separate ways..
