Nathan stood still, rooted to the spot. Emily’s words had left him feeling as though he had plummeted into a deep abyss. A chilling sensation slowly started to creep up from his feet, spreading until it engulfed his heart. This is cold and piercingly painful! If I don’t heed Mom’s words, I will be the traitor of the Carter family, betraying my deceased father! However, what about Liam and her?
Seeing his dispirited demeanor, the butler couldn’t help but approach and gently advise, “Mr. Nathan, don’t take Mrs. Carter’s words to heart. She was merely speaking out of haste.”
Nathan trudged up the stairs, cach step as heavy as if his legs were filled with lead.
The butler watched his retreating figure, sighing helplessly.
Upon returning to his room, Nathan was immediately met with an overwhelming silence. This only served to accentuate his sense of desolation.
In reality, over those years, he had never forgotten to search for Daniel.
Even after many years had passed, some clues were still discernible.
Back then, all on board had tragically lost their lives in the plane crash. However, the remains of Olivia’s parents and Daniel were never found.
This inevitably led him to entertain the notion that perhaps Daniel hadn’t actually died, which was why he had ordered people to investigate the events of that year secretly.
Most importantly, he wanted to get to the bottom of that matter.
He harbored some doubts about whether Daniel’s untimely death was truly caused by the malicious actions of Olivia’s parents.
Everything he knew was solely based on the one–sided accounts of his mother, Emily.
No one knew the truth.
Nathan pondered as he walked into the bathroom. He lifted his gaze to his reflection in the mirror, his eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions. What if the reality isn’t as Mom has described? That’s a possibility. If the truth indeed isn’t as we’ve perceived, then how are we going to make amends for the way we treated Olivia over the years?
Thinking about it, he felt a severe heartache, and the pain was making it hard to breathe.
Nathan dared not imagine if that was the case. How would I face Olivia? Would Olivia hate me the same way we hated her?
The thought of her possibly hating him sparked a self–deprecating laugh from Nathan. If that were to be the case, the Carter family and I would owe her so much.
Nathan stripped off his clothes and stepped into a bathtub filled to the brim with water. He laid down, allowing his body to slowly submerge beneath the surface.
With his eyes closed, he experienced the sensation of being unable to catch his breath.
Until he could barely breathe, he finally sat up from the water. He lifted his hand to wipe the water off his face and opened his eyes. His eyes were dull and lifeless.
After a numbly taken bath, he changed into his pajamas and descended the stairs. From the liquor cabinet, he pulled out a bottle of wine.
He opened it and immediately guzzied a good amount straight from the bottle.

Back then, her life in Carter Manor was far from pleasant. Emily gave her a hard time at every turn, yet Olivia bore it all without a word of complaint. Olivia even shouldered the burdens and grievances, taking great care of him.
That was simply because she believed her parents were responsible for Daniel’s death.
What if her parents didn’t cause Dad’s death? How am I supposed to make it up to her? How is the Carter family supposed to make it up to her? Feeling a surge of irritation in his heart, Nathan took several more swigs of his drink.
Out of concern for Nathan, Ethan specifically went to check on him. However, upon entering the door and seeing Nathan drinking, Ethan was so startled that his face turned pale.
“Mr. Carter, how could you drink?” Ethan immediately took the bottle from Nathan’s hand. Oh, my goodness! More than half have already been drunk!
Ethan’s brows furrowed in concern when he glanced at the clearly unwell Nathan. He let out a sigh, advising, “Mr. Carter, you were just ill a couple of days ago. You really shouldn’t be drinking. If you have another episode, it would be quite problematic!”
Nathan paid him no mind, snatching back the wine and taking another hefty swig.
