Dressed in black. Nathan stood solemnly before his father’s grave in the private cemetery of the Carter family.
Emily stood next to him, ceaselessly wiping away her tears.
Every year on that day, numerous relatives and friends would come to pay their respects, and Emma was among them.
She was dressed in a pure black dress, complete with a French–style black hat. Compared to others, she appeared somewhat overdressed.
She seemed just like a daughter–in–law who had already married into the Carter family.
When it was time to pay respects, Emma purposefully positioned herself next to Emily. She whispered intimately to Emily, sharing her thoughts and feelings.
To an outsider observing that scene, they would perceive Emma as incredibly considerate and understanding-
Of course, that was also her intention, but…
She glanced up at Nathan, who stood straight as a rod, his gaze unwavering as though he hadn’t noticed her at all.
She bit her lip, wanting to call out to him. However, remembering what he had said the night before, she held herself back.
After the visit to the grave, everyone else had left, leaving only Emily and her son, Nathan, at the grave..
Emily stepped forward, her fingers gently tracing the photograph of her husband on the tombstone. She spoke softly. “Daniel, it’s been five years since you left. During these years, under the stewardship of Nathan, Carter Group has flourished. You can rest easy. Daniel, how I wished you were still here. You could have seen how well Carter Group has progressed. Nathan has not let you down in any way.”
At that point, Emily couldn’t help but break into tears, her voice choked with emotion as she said, “Daniel, I miss you so much. Why did you just leave me like this? Didn’t you promise to grow old with me?”
Nathan silently watched his mother, who was crying with sorrow. He was somewhat moved, feeling as if someone had firmly grasped his heart.
He still remembered how devastated his mother was when she found out about his father’s accident years ago. She cried so much that she fainted a few times. If it wasn’t for him being there, he was genuinely afraid she might have followed his father in death.
Emily gently wiped away her tears, catching a glimpse of her son from the corner of her eye, her gaze subtly twinkling “Daniel, both Nathan and I are doing well, so you can rest easy. The only thing I’m currently worried about is Nathan’s marriage.”
Nathan’s gaze narrowed, his hands at his side slowly clenching into fists when he heard that.
Emily continued, “However, I have found him a wife, the heiress of the Patel family, Emma. You should have met her before. Emma is a good kid, both beautiful and gentle. She and Nathan truly make a great match. In this lifetime of mine, this is the only wish I have left.”
Then, she turned her gaze toward Nathan, her expression filled with sorrow. She said, “Nathan, I may not have many good years lefi. Perhaps one day, I’ll join your father. Today marks the anniversary of your father’s passing. I hope you can make a promise to both me and your late father to welcome Emma as your wife.”
Emily purposefully chose that day to force Nathan to make a decision, believing that if she forced him to make a promise in front of his father’s grave, he wouldn’t refuse her request.
Naturally, Nathan could tell she was doing it on purpose. His expression immediately darkened, and the look he gave her carried a noticeably colder edge.
“Talking about such things on a death anniversary is inappropriate. Please, calm yourself.” A hint of warning was laced within his cold, stern voice.

A barely noticeable shift occurred in Nathan’s brow when Olivia was mentioned. Silently, his hands clenched at his sides.
“Nathan, do you dare to tell your father you want to marry that woman, Olivia?” Emily pointed at the tombstone, the question seething through her gritted teeth.
