Nathan’s handsome face was taut. His mother’s unreasonable fuss had left him feeling incredibly frustrated.
His dark eyes narrowed slightly as he began to speak, “I don’t want to discuss this issue with you today.”
Nevertheless, Emily persisted, “No, you must give me an answer today.”
“Mom!” Nathan showed signs of anger, glaring at Emily. “Enough is enough!”
He genuinely didn’t want to engage in pointless arguments with her on such a day.
“I don’t care, you have to make a choice today, whether you like it or not. Unless you want your father to never rest in peace! Emily directly used her husband as leverage against him, escalating the situation. She threatened, “If you dare to utter a word of refusal, consider our mother–son relationship over!”
Upon hearing that, Nathan scowled in anger. Through gritted teeth, he asked her, “Mom, is there anything you’ve done over these years apart from threatening me?”
Truth be told, her threats were almost always because of Olivia, but he never imagined the latest instance would be so outrageous, threatening to sever their mother–son relationship!
Nathan felt a surge of gloom stuck in his chest, neither rising nor falling, causing him great discomfort.
“Right. I am threatening you!” Emily candidly admitted. “I want you to sever all ties with that woman.”
She didn’t believe there was anything wrong with what she had done.
She believed the parents of that despicable Olivia were responsible for the death of her husband, and she could never find it in her heart to forgive the younger woman.
Thus, seeing her son getting so close to that despicable person, she couldn’t bear it.
Nathan clenched his fists tightly, a chilly aura radiating from him. His voice was cold and rigid as he stated a fact, “Carter Group and Horizon Ventures are in a partnership”
He should have kept his mouth shut. As soon as he brought it up, Emily wouldn’t let it go, pointing at his nose and mocking him relentlessly.
“Look at yourself. The moment she returned to the country, you couldn’t wait to get all tangled up with her. Do you really think I’m oblivious to everything? I’m telling you, that wretch will forever be guilty in my eyes.” Emily said through gritted teeth. “Even if she were to apologize at your father’s grave, it would be nothing less than she deserves!”
Driven by hatred, Emily lost her sanity, her expression distorting in a rather frightening way.
Nathan looked at her, a hint of sorrow welling up in his heart. A trace of mockery tugged at the corners of his mouth. “Hasn’t she suffered enough?”
He always remembered how, back in the day, Olivia, despite her young age, was brought over by Emily every year on that day to how until Emily was satisfied.
Thinking about it, Nathan felt a deep pang of sorrow for the young Olivia back then.
Back then, he wanted to intervene, but each time, his mother threatened him with her death, leaving him powerless to do anything.
However, things were no longer the same. He wouldn’t allow such occurrences to happen again.
His retort drew a cold, sarcastic laugh from Emily. “Enough? How could it possibly be enough?”
Her emotions surged, her hand thumping against her chest as she spoke bitterly, “With my husband gone, she has no right to refuse, even if it means paying with her life!”

Nathan found it hard to bear because Emily was still his mother, so he stepped forward with the intention of soothing her.
Yet, she avoided him.
“Has she even visited in the past five years?” Emily lifted her head, her eyes reddened by hatred, her expression distorted beyond recognition, a stark contrast from her usual dignified and composed demeanor.
Barely concealing his surprise, Nathan regarded her with guarded eyes.
All he could hear was her gritting her teeth, each word being forced out from between them. “Since she’s back, let’s make up for all the lost years
Immediately after, she called for her bodyguard. “Bring Olivia over here!”
