Olivia and Lucas were deep in conversation when a sudden sound of approaching footsteps cut through the chatter. They spun around, curiosity tingling as they came face–to–face with a man.
His hair was meticulously styled, framing a face radiating power and elegance. His dark suit fit him flawlessly, leaving no doubt about his status. He had captivating eyes, calm and deep like a starlit night, that seemed to hold Olivia’s gaze hostage.
A jolt of surprise ran through her, leaving her speechless. Lucas, though stunned for a moment, regained his composure. “Hi, Mr. Carter. It’s good to see you here.”
Mr. Carter, however, seemed oblivious to Lucas, his intense gaze fixed solely on Olivia.
Then Eric stepped in. “Mr. Carter, this is Ms. Monroe, the General Manager at Horizon Ventures, like I told you.”
He turned to Olivia and added, “Ms. Monroe, this is Mr. Carter, CEO of Carter Group. We were talking about you, so I thought you should meet him.”
“Thank you, Mr. Bovril,” Olivia acknowledged politely, then looked at Nathan expectantly.
His behavior was baffling. Did Nathan not remember her? He should have verified her identity by now.
Maintaining her composure, she offered a handshake. “Mr. Carter, it’s a pleasure. Olivia Monroe, Horizon Ventures.”
Without a smile, Nathan replied, “Ms. Monroe, we’ve crossed paths before. The ‘pleasure‘ seems misplaced.”
Olivia’s hand froze in mid–air, caught off guard. She attempted to withdraw it, but Nathan wouldn’t release it. A flush crept up her neck as she frowned at him, confused.
Sensing the growing tension, Eric spoke up. “Have you two had the pleasure of meeting beforehand?”
Lucas intervened quickly. “We briefly met at Martinez Group a few days ago but didn’t have a chance to introduce ourselves. Mr. Carter, a handshake would be a good start. We’re looking forward to your guidance on this collaboration.”
With a firm grip, Lucas shook Nathan’s hand. Finally, Olivia was able to pull hers back. But the air crackled with awkwardness as Nathan mirrored her action and stepped back.
Just then, Emma intruded as she called out with joy, “Nate!”
Before Nathan could react, she slipped her arm through his.
Nathan frowned, his confusion written all over his face. “What are you doing here?”
Emma, a hint of shyness in her smile, explained, “Well, I overheard someone say you were here, and I just had to come see you! I hope I’m not interrupting.”
She beamed at Eric. “Hi, Mr. Bovril! Oh, and my dad sends his best.”
The conversation continued smoothly, without a hitch.
