Nathan was momentarily stunned, a rare expression of astonishment crossing his typically stoic face.
“Did you send that computer program?” he questioned, disbelief coloring his tone.
Had the program that had baffled the technicians at the Carter Group actually been sent by this young boy?
“Yes, it was me,” Liam confessed.
Nathan struggled to comprehend. “How is that possible?”
Liam was on the verge of explaining. “Why is that impossible?” he thought. He also intended to mention that he had gained access through his mother’s program.
But just at that moment, a sudden knock came on the door.
After a brief pause, Olivia entered the room, noticing Liam was still awake. She smiled gently and asked, “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Liam discreetly tucked his phone under the blanket, returning her smile sweetly. “I’ll sleep soon, Mommy. I just wanted to say goodnight.”
Olivia approached the bedside, tucking him in with a loving gaze. “Do you want me to stay with you tonight?”
He always insists on having me stay, doesn’t he?
He’s
unusually compliant tonight. It’s not like him!

Olivia was underestimated his resilience.
Liam blinked his big eyes and expressed earnestly, “I want to learn to be independent. I’m a big boy now! But, can you still tell me a bedtime story and then leave after I fall asleep?”
“You don’t usually enjoy bedtime stories, do you?” Olivia teased, gently pinching his cheek.
The little boy was clever, often dismissing stories as childish.
But he pleaded, “I want to listen tonight. I can’t fall asleep, and I want you to stay… Mommy, I love you the most!”
With his sweet voice and pleading tone, Olivia couldn’t resist.
Her heart melted, and she agreed, “Alright, I’ll tell you a story, but you have to promise not to say it’s or childish!”
“I promise I won’t find it boring,” the little boy assured with a vigorous nod.
Olivia chuckled. She fetched a storybook from the shelf, lay beside him and began weaving a tale…

On the other end of the phone, Nathan listened to that familiar voice, subconsciously holding his breath, unable to tear himself away from the sound.

Like a gentle feather, a warm spring breeze, it was soothing and comforting, touching, his heart deeply
Olivia’s voice gradually faded into the background as time passed, eventually vanishing altogether.
It seemed that Liam had drifted off to sleep!
Nathan heard the rustle of covers, followed by someone rising from the bed and the soft murmur, “Goodnight, baby.”
Then, the quiet footsteps faded away.
Until silence enveloped the room once more.
Nathan sat in a daze momentarily before softly bidding, “Goodnight…
After a pause, he ended the video call.
In that instant, he felt a pang of reluctance to disconnect!
That night, Nathan found it difficult to find peaceful slumber.
He dreamt of the past, a figure sitting outside his door in the rain, appearing forlorn yet desperately imploring him – Olivia!
At that moment, she had looked at him with eyes that seemed to seek salvation.
But he had to crush her aspirations, watching her fade into the distance…
The next time they met, that girl was guarded and aloof!
