All Nathan could dwell on was Olivia’s emotional distance, a sensation of constriction tightening his chest.
The following day, in the conference room.
“Is this the proposal you labored over for a week?”
Nathan’s voice thundered as he slammed the folder onto the table, his frustration palpable. “If you’re not committed to your work, then perhaps it’s time to consider your position. We can’t afford to squander resources any longer.”
“Sorry, Mr. Carter, I’ll go back and revise it immediately,” the planning department manager stammered, wiping beads of sweat from his brow as he took a deep breath.
A tense silence enveloped the room as each person avoided eye contact, fearful of provoking the CEO further.
The palpable tension in the room made it evident to everyone that the CEO was in a foul mood that day!
Despite their apprehension, Nathan’s anger remained unrelenting as he reprimanded the team.
After the meeting adjourned, the staff dispersed quickly, eager to escape the CEO’s wrath.
Returning to his office, Nathan was greeted by Ethan bearing a cup of coffee, his voice trembling as he offered it. “Mr. Carter, here’s the Americano you requested…”
Nathan’s expression remained as cold as ice as he accepted the coffee.
Trembling with fear, Ethan turned around, eager to leave and avoid causing any trouble.
Just then, Nathan’s phone on the desk began to ring, indicating an incoming video call.
Nathan glanced at the screen and saw that it was Liam calling.
For a brief moment, Nathan’s steely expression softened as he answered the call, striving to maintain composure as he greeted his son, “Hello, Liam…”
As Liam’s cheerful face appeared on the screen, accompanied by his joyful voice, “Daddy, it’s me!”
“Yes, I know,” Nathan replied, his expression softening at the sight of Liam. “Why did you suddenly video- call me?”
“Because I miss you. I came back from kindergarten today, but it’s so boring…”
Liam’s voice continued with a hopeful expression on his face. “Daddy, the kindergarten classes are really boring. I already know everything. I just play with my friends every day.”
As Nathan listened to Liam’s complaints, he felt a surprising shift in his mood. His fiery temper inexplicably subsided, replaced by a growing sense of longing for his son.

“Really? But what about Mommy?” Liam asked, a hint of surprise and concern in his voice.
“Just keep it between us. I’ll make sure to have you back before class ends,” Nathan reassured him.
Liam’s face lit up with joy. “That sounds amazing! I’ll be waiting for you, Daddy.”
With that, they ended the call.
Nathan wasted no time grabbing his car keys and heading to the kindergarten.

Upon his arrival, Nathan spotted Liam waiting anxiously, his boredom evident as he fiddled with a Rubik’s Cube.
“Liam,” Nathan called softly as he approached.
Liam heard Nathan’s voice and completely forgot about the Rubik’s Cube. Surprised, he raised his head and dashed towards Nathan.
“Daddy, you finally came!” he exclaimed, eagerly throwing himself into Nathan’s arms.
“Have you been waiting long?” Nathan inquired, lifting Liam into his arms.
“Not at all!” Liam replied gleefully.
Nathan nodded. “Let’s get permission from your teachers first, and then we’ll be on our way.”
“Okay,” Liam agreed eagerly.
After securing permission, Nathan carried Liam to the car, ready for a day of father–son bonding.
Seated in the car, Nathan turned to Liam and asked, “Where would you like to go play?”
As he spoke, he retrieved his phone to plan their outing.
Accustomed to his busy work schedule, he rarely had the opportunity to indulge in leisure activities, let alone spend time with a child.
Mr. Carter was wholly inexperienced in this regard.
“Anywhere is fine, Daddy. You can decide! If you’re very busy, we can go to your company. I won’t disturb your work,” Liam replied understandingly. “As long as I’m with you, I’m thrilled.”
