Luxe Co. worked a lot faster than I thought.
A week later, I received an invitation to the launch of their new line of jewelry designs. Meanwhile, Luxe Co. thought that the rings I’d designed had a very deep meaning to them, so Tony decided to auction them off instead.
He also sent me an invitation to the auction. I attended it with Marley, wanting to witness it with my own eyes. I hoped that their new owner would be a lovely couple who could experience the happiness I never got to have.
Tony spent a lot of money organizing the auction. I was very surprised to learn that the plain wedding rings I’d designed were going to be the grand finale for the auction.
The auctioneer, Liam Ryder, held up the pair of rings in his hand with much gusto and said, “The designer of these wedding rings was a famous jewelry designer in Crenia. Initially, she wanted to wear the rings with her lover for the rest of her life.
“Unfortunately, some things happened, and the designer ultimately never got to wear them with her lover. This time, we hope that the next buyer will be able to fulfill the purpose that these wedding bands used to symbolize and experience true happiness for the rest of their lives.”
Marley seemed to be enjoying himself while listening to Liam explain the history of the bands. He then cast me a rather puzzled look.
“Fulfill their purpose‘? ‘True happiness‘? This guy sure knows how to talk,” Marley said. He was also a design student, but he majored in product design instead. Naturally, he couldn’t quite understand all the flowery language that people in the jewelry industry often used.
The auction started. The base price was set at two million dollars, but the auction prices just kept rising steadily. After all, these people seemed more than willing to spend big for the sake of their happiness.
“Four million dollars!”
“Six million dollars!”
“Eight million dollars!”
